A (Second) Shot at This...

MOVIES.

I'm posting, for the first time, my list of the top 100 films ever released. To be brief, my intent in putting this up in this forum is twofold: first, I would like to open a discussion about film on a larger scale on this blog - I welcome any and all comments about anything this post brings up - your thoughts, agreements, disagreements, suggestions, even your thoughts on lists in the larger sense, if that's what strikes you. Second, I hope to use the feedback from my friends and others to improve my own posting - in short, I want to make this the best list I can.

So, here goes: A top 100 films, selected and ranked on grounds of artistic, cultural and creative merit. Although in large part unavoidable, my attempt in making this list was to ignore either contemporary relevance or temporal considerations. In other words, I believe David Lean's 1956 version of "Great Expectations" is better than versions both before and after its release not because it broke any technical ground, but because I believe it is a more focused and emotionally satisfying creative work than any other rendition. Similarly, I leave "Birth of a Nation" off this list not because it is racially offensive, but because, frankly, I believe there have been 100 movies better than it made in the last 100 years or so.

On with the show:

Sir:

I am--just a little bit--annoyed at the ranking of Annie Hall. It is, you know, I mean, my masterpiece and I believe that it deserves more recognition than you give it here. What do I have to do? I tore my heart out for that movie. I tore my heart out and left it out for that movie. AND let you stomp on it.

Plus, sir, Ms. Keaton is just so cute, how could you disappoint her like this. Not to mention what this is going to do to my ego. I feel, so, sad and lonely and a little like wandering the streets staring into the blackness that is now my life.

Sincerely,

Woody

Where, may I ask, are Julia and Memento to name a few?

ah, 'memento' - i do think its an excellent film, but i also think it relies very heavily on its gimmick (the plot, when straightened out, isn't mind-blowing, to say the least). of course, it can and should be argued that a story is in at least as much the telling as it is the content - perhaps even moreso. on those grounds, 'memento' is pretty great. i guess i've got to play favorites on this one - its a very, very good movie, but just not as good, i think, as the other movies on this list.

as for 'julia,' can't say i've seen it - but one of these days...

also, thanks for checking out the post - this is a new blog and in desparate need of readership in addition to graham stowe. although he does well for himself...

Ok, you might be right about Memento, but, stories are indeed in the telling and though I do like Diane Keaton, Woody Allen is so totally self absorbed that I can't put Annie Hall above, anything really, Though it's been a long time since I saw it, i.e. when it first came out.

Julia is that old Lillian Hellman story from Pentimento. Redgrave and Fonda. Two of my favs. I have loved Fonda since she had the daring to put her career on the line during the Vietnam War by becoming Hanoi Jane. I know it's not a good reason to like a film, and she's not always a good actress, but . . .

julia definitely sounds interesting - it might make it into the netflix queue - especially on such strong recommendation as one from a reader of both graham's site and mine thus far! as for annie hall, you cant try to look past allen, you have to look AT him - and realize that annie hall is the one movie where he is most himself and thus can have his comedy career encapsulated (if that can be verbed in the past tense) in one, very well made picture. of course, this is also why i'm able to shun manhattan so well...

but what about you, brd? any other movies that you would include that i'm ignoring? i've got to admit, in putting a list together like this, its pretty easy to forget a lot, so i'm always eager to hear other people's thoughts.

thanks for the readership, at least thus far!

Perhaps it would not be good form for me too list too many on your site. I could do that on my own I suppose, but here are my top 12.

1. Chisum with John Wayne and Geoffrey Deuel--because Geoff is my cousin and he played a great Billy the Kid!
2. Wit with Emma Thompson
3. The Matrix (I just love the symbolism--I can't help myself.)
4. What About Bob?
5. How Green Was My Valley -John Ford
6. You've Got Mail with Tom and Meg
7. Long Walk Home--Whoopi
8. Midnight Cowboy
9. Cinderella
10. Amadeus
11. Sound of Music
12. Pride and Prejudice (BBC version)

How about those? I tried to hit various genre.

i see that genre jumping...i'm with you on 'how green was my valley' - my own list will need that addendum in the near future. and i also hear you on 'the matrix' - its taken a lot of hard work (and those two sequels) to keep that movie off a pretty big pedastal. my wife will love to see your inclusion of cinderella and amadeus, and the ghost of jon voight's acting career will be equally glad to see you remember midnight cowboy. i haven't seen 'wit,' although now i must, it seems...

...and of course, lists are my first academic love - so i always welcome them.

I realize this is an old blog, but I cant believe I found another Chisum fan! Its hard to find anyone who has an old(well relatively old) western on their top movie list. Hats off to you and you list brd!
