Oooh, you could easily pick 3 or 4 of Sufjan's Christmas stuff. Those are so good. Great choice there. I think I included "Hallelujah" and "Hurt" simply to make up for dissing the Hendrix version of "Watchtower." Had to at least get a standard from this type of list in there somehow (although, I think I picked the more obvious Joe Cocker Beatles cover, his rendition of Come Together is really solid too).
I like the linked version of Bowie's song much better than the one from the Almost Famous soundtrack, but the song itself still kind of leaves me cold. Now, the version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow (and Wonderful World) here is amazing. Ella Fitzgerald has a really nice version too (can't believe I forgot that one at first!), but this might be even better.
All in all, a great list. Shame you had to kill off the Beatles with your album art, though to be fair, Paul was clearly already dead in that picture. :)
We did covers for this 80 MOAB disc, and the following songs appeared on both your list and ours.
1. LS PillBox
2. Kid A
3. Where Did you Sleep
4. I Will Survive
5. Wonderwall
Here's my list:
1. Dynamite Hack (covering Eazy E)- Boyz-N-the-Hood
2. The Futureheads (covering Kate Bush) - Hounds of Love
3. Mark Kozelek (covering AC/DC) - Love at First Feel
4. Polyphonic Spree (covering Your Mother) - Lithium
5. LCD Soundsystem (covering Joy Division) - No Love Lost
6. Aretha Franklin (covering CS&N) - Love the One You're With
7. Live (covering Vic Chestnutt) - Supernatural
8. Nickel Creek (covering Pavement) - Spit on a Stranger
9. Pedro the Lion (covering Radiohead) - Let Down
10. John Mayer (covering his reputation by covering Radiohead) - Kid A
11. Antony and the Johnsons (covering The Velvet Underground) - Candy Says
12. Spanky Williams (covering Stevie Ray Vaughan) - Sunshine of Your Love
13. Susan Tedeschi (covering that Keith Richards song from Let it Bleed) - Silver and Gold
14. Joe Cocker (covering The Boxtops) - The Letter
15. Sam Amidon (covering R. Kelly) - Relief
16. Scarlett Johansson (yes THAT Scarlett Johannson covering Tom Waits) - Anywhere I Lay My Head
17. Frank Sinatra (covering Cole Porter's standard) - I've Got You Under My Skin
18. William Fitzsimmons (covering Iron and Wine covering James Taylor) - You Can Close Your Eyes
19. My Morning Jacket and Eddie Vedder (covering the Guess Who) - A Quick One While He's Away
20. Evan Dando (covering Victoria Williams) - Frying Pan
As always, Jonathan, you outdo me. Awesome list--sorry I missed it. I pine for the MoAB days of yore...
Scott, I liked the list you posted on Facebook--in fact, knowing you already pegged Hurt and Hallelujah is one of the reasons I left them out--figured I'd keep a few surprises in here.
Also: I've got no retort to your Paul joke. Solid.
Hendrix's "Watchtower" belongs on the list of songs that were originally covers but have now replaced the original in most people's minds. Even Dylan, when he plays it now, seems to be covering Jimi. Same probably goes for Talking Heads' "Take Me to the River," Cream's "Crossroads," Aretha's "R.E.S.P.E.C.T." or Arcade Fire's "Killing Me Softly."

First of all I want to say wonderful blog! I had a quick question in which I'd like to ask if you do not mind. I was interested to find out how you center yourself and clear your thoughts before writing. I have had difficulty clearing my mind in getting my thoughts out. I do take pleasure in writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are lost just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or tips? Kudos!
